The many races that are held during this event not only bring student athletes from around the island together but provides an opportunity for stand-out’s to make a name for themselves on the track too. 2019 marked the 109th Issa Boys and Girls Champs which is held annually during the week before Easter. The Issa Boys and Girls Champs is hosted in the city of Kingston, making it a major annual highlight on the city calendar. Early versions of the Issa Boys and Girls Champs saw competition separated into boys and girls sports days. By 1999, the benefits of combining athletes and races was evident and the Champs was born much to the delight of athletes and spectators alike. Today, athletes have the chance to compete in races over the course of five days of fun and exciting competition.

From 400 meter hurdles to long-distance medleys, athletes specializing in all types of races have the chance to prove themselves at this event. While it’s a great opportunity for individuals to push the limits of athletic ability, it’s also a fun time for competing local schools to push for new records. On the boy’s side of racing, Calabar High, Jamaica College, and Kingston College have long been in a battle for titles that makes each race more exciting than the next. For the girls, Issa Boys and Girls Champs proves to be a battleground between Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen High. No matter who takes home the gold, Issa Boys and Girls Champs is an event that defines the character and friendly competition of the island of Jamaica.
